Turning is the process of shaping an object into a rounded form by applying tools against the workpiece as it spins on the lathe. The result is an object whose every section is a perfect circle

Virtually all early lathes were powered by cords and required two men to operate, one to pull the cord to rotate the workpiece, the other to use a sharpened tool to cut and shape the workpiece.

Fortunately today’s lathes are powered by electricity making it a lot easier for one person to operate.  The basic process however has not changed in 3000 years.

The first cuts create a perfect cylinder

The piece is reversed for hollowing.

Hollowing creates the wall thickness.
